A village in the Carpathian Mountains, one of the last outposts of pre-modernity, an elderly man, sensing his time is short, tells his young grandchildren tales that weave a family saga covering the real history from the 1870s to the time of the telling. One of the children, now grown, is the re-teller of these tales, while the other, Miruna, perhaps has the gift of second sight. Incorporating elements of fantasy common to the storytelling traditions of the Balkans, historical characters mix with imaginary beings in a landscape that recreates the world of an isolated village bearing an unusual name Evil Vale. Ancestors are talked about as if ancient heroes, and the novel shifts focus between telling about their lives and the storyteller’s own experiences through the prism of the village during both world wars. As past tragedies are presented in a way that the grandchildren might picture and remember them, the novel has been called a kind of meta-fairy tale, a story about the lost tradition of oral storytelling itself, the conveyance of a family history from one generation to the next via the spoken word. With the death of the grandfather, the children realize that confronted with the ubiquitous hand of modernity, which the village has managed to frustrate over a succession of regimes, a whole world of stories and the entire memory of a family and of its idiosyncratic way of life in the village might have been irrevocably lost.

Blending the autobiographical and historical with the marvelous, Miruna, a Tale is a novel whose core is the exploration of the imaginary themes and motives that informed traditional society in the mountainous regions of Romania, a world that was radically transformed into virtual extinction over the course of the 20th century.

Described by one critic as a “literary jewel whose strange and singular spell holds the reader in its thrall,” Miruna, a Tale received the Bucharest Writers Association Fiction Award in 2007.

The novel is a fantastic blend of history and fiction, weaved together seamlessly in the style of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The story starts with two children being dropped off to spend the summer with their grandparents in a Romanian village where not much has changed for centuries. The grandfather starts telling children stories that go back to the two wars, in part to ensure that these memories are not lost, but perhaps also in one last attempt to make sense of how chance and history twisted the lives of the many people he had come across. At some point, the grandmother objects the children are too young for such stories. The grandpa retorts that since the children have not experienced anything similar, they may perceive the stories as fairy tales, but these lessons have to be passed on. And he turns out to be right; as the book progresses we can see how Miruna’s mind and soul are shaped by what she learned from her grandpa. It’s a coming of age story, a wonderful reminder that our roots make us who we are, a window open into a world that is long gone, but may still hold the key of the current order of things. It will make you reflect, dream, and momentarily escape the rigid boundaries of your current reality. Highly recommended. (I got the Kindle edition and there were no problems with the layout, as is the case with many Kindle books).

Miruna a Tale eBook Bogdan Suceava Alistair Ian Blyth Reviews

I was moved by this book and had dreams and visions of Romania all night after finishing it. It adds such an amazing layer of knowledge and emotion to Romanian folk life of a past era. I highly recommend it!

This book reeeeally got to me...

No magical realism here, appearances to the contrary. The enchantment that hovers over this mountain valley in the Carpathians is uncanny and all its own. A second reading hasn't lessened the impression.

Every detail of life in Evil Vale rests on the stone-cold reality of folk magic & spells. Grinding rural life, government census counts, local bandits & two wars have done nothing to lessen its impact. Deal with the supernatural as you may, no one escapes it. And the magic here is enthralling.

English translation turned in by A.I. Blyth is matchless.

Who was it who said a great novel makes you feel the Earth's rotation underfoot? It's certainly felt here. If Suceava wrote nothing else this little volume would seal his reputation imho. Read it and prove me wrong.
Simply put, I love the s**t out of this book.

A grandfather tells his grandchildren the story of their family. Turns out it's full of werewolves, fay folk, bandit lords, and spells. The Grandfather tells of an age when magic was real, when fairy-tales and history existed side by side, and time was infinite. Highly recommended for lovers of fantasy and folklore, or for anyone looking to reclaim the magic of their childhood.

The author came to my International Lit class, signed my book and even gave me the pen he signed it with! What a cool guy.
